Some NORMAL reactions to an ABNORMAL event.

 

The reactions that you are experiencing are normal to what is probably the most traumatic event that will affect you life. The following are normal and you may be experiencing some of them.

 

PHYSICAL REACTIONS

 

Sleep Problems, Fatigue, Hyperactivity, Under Activity, Health Problems and Loss of Appetite or conversely Comfort Eating and Exaggerated Reactions to sudden noises or movements or just feeling frightened of everything.

 

THOUGHT PATTERN REACTIONS

 

Difficulty with concentration, Flashbacks, Confusion, Short Term Memory Loss, Forgetfulness, Decision Making, Imagination being worse than reality.

 

EMOTIONAL REACTIONS

 

Inability to attach importance to anything, General Fear, Thoughts of Revenge, Guilt and Self-blame, Emotional Numbing, Over Sensitivity, Anger, Short Tempered, Frustration, Helplessness, Anxiety and Depression.

 

One question that is very often asked is ‘How long will I feel like this? This question does not have a simple answer. Some people appear to carry on with their lives. Others find that as the years go on they feel angrier. All the reactions described will probably be with you for a long time, in some shape or form. This may last longer than some people, who have not experienced a loss through murder, ‘expect’ or think is normal.

 

There are many things you can do to help you alleviate some of the pain associated with a traumatic experience. It is important that you talk, and the people who have most answers – and will understand how you feel – are those who have experienced this most horrific crime. Our volunteers are ‘professionals’ from the experience they have gone through and also the training they have received.

 

By allowing others who have similar personal experiences to understand and help you either in an emotional or practical way will, however hard it may be, slowly help you to come to terms with your loss.
